@jnd exactly. Not worth the trouble to go after just the camera. If a hacker already has control of your pc, they're not going to bother waiting for you to connect a camera. At that point you're already screwed, lol.

As per a report by Check Point Research, hackers have registered domains posing as popular video conferencing solutions like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. The report says that such domains could be used to pose as official links while potentially tricking people into downloading malware or sharing their personal information.

In this case, cybercriminals are simply exploiting the increasing popularity of video conferencing platforms given how people are dependent on such applications for their professional and personal needs. A report by Sensor Tower reveals that Zoom was the most downloaded application in the month of April 2020. The list of top 10 non-game application also included other video conferencing solutions like Google Meet (at 8th position) and Microsoft Teams (at 10th position).

The second step then involves writing a configuration file for an application stress testing tool, of which many are readily available for legitimate purposes. That configuration file points the stress tool at Zoom. Then comes step three, the credential stuffing attack that employs multiple bots to avoid the same IP address being spotted checking multiple Zoom accounts. Lags between attempts are also introduced to retain a semblance of normal usage and prevent being detected as a denial of service (DoS) attack.

As pointed out by some viewers, splitting the screen or making the zoom call smaller and opening a Word document next to it can work similarly too. However, this tip allows you to keep your video call at its normal size, and importantly allows you to still see the other people on the call, and their reactions.

Check Point's researchers were able to prove that hackers could easily generate and verify Zoom Meeting IDs to target victims, enabling a hacker to eavesdrop on Zoom meetings, giving them intrusive access to all audio, video and documents shared throughout the duration of the meeting.
